Guest post by Sheri Kaye Hoff:

Journal to Change Your Life

One of the most powerful processes that I discuss in my book, Keys to Living Joyfully, is writing in a daily journal. I recommend that you writing early in the day, preferably very soon after you wake up. I light candles and listen to soft music while I write. I have disciplined myself to write thoughts of gratitude first, then I write affirmations and goals, and finally, I write prayers. I usually reflect for a while after I write, because sometimes I feel answers and/or intuition guiding me. I also like to do rewrites of situations. For instance, if a situation went badly, I rewrite how I wish it had happened. Sometimes I write poetry or other thoughts. At one time in my life, I used journaling to express anger and frustration. While this did have its place in my life, I do not do this anymore. I have found that if I devote time to writing angry thoughts, I become more angry, depressed and frustrated. You might need to experiment with your writing style to see what works for you. I focus on positive thoughts. I reframe any anger I feel in a positive statement. I look at my journaling as not just an opportunity to record thoughts, but also as an opportunity to change my thinking. I see journaling as an active tool in creating my day and my future.
Writing in my journal helps me start my day thinking correctly. I have clarity and a sense of being firmly grounded. I also start the day with a peaceful feeling that all is well. This is an immediate experience that a person can have even on day one of writing. Long-term positive effects include being able to read past entries and note personal growth. You may also realize that you have achieved some of your goals and/or experienced answers to prayers. I once found a journal a few years later and realized that I had achieved all of my goals written in the journal. My journal goes with me when I travel. I have only missed writing a few times when I was too ill to get out of bed. If you want to unlock power to change your life, I recommend that you try daily journaling.

I feel that journaling is a wonderful and therapeutic way to step back and look into one's life, from a different perspective. I am guilty of not keeping a journal, though I have thought about it many times. I have even went so far as to buy small journal like books for each of us - myself, husband and 6 year old daughter (my 2 yr. old is a bit young yet, lol) to keep a gratitude journal, just have not followed through. After reading Ms. Hoff's guest post, I am inspired to do so, however. I especially love the idea of rewriting something negative into something positive. Also the idea of writing positive and focusing on the positive aspects of life is a wonderful suggestion. What about you? Do you keep a journal of any kind?

Journaling is so therapeutic! I don't keep one now only because the spare minutes I have are spent sleeping, haha...but I've always kept one. And the greatest thing about it is that it's your legacy. Long after you're gone, that legacy will carry on forever whether you're a published author or not!

I agree, Dorothy! I love reading about others in diaries/journals, etc and think it would be fun to have my grandchildren one day read my thoughts (though some thoughts may be better left unread, lol)

Thanks, Kim! I just received Sheri's book and can't wait to read it! She seems like such an awesome person!

Wonderful post. I did my 'morning pages' for years and yes--they can be very powerful. I haven't done them in a while and there's a definite different. It's hard getting back to them, though, but once you start the habit, you can't get by without them.

Hi Dorothy,
It is wonderful to leave a legacy for future generations. Perhaps you could find a few minutes to keep a journal again? Nudge, nudge. lol.

Hi April,
That makes me think of the movie, Mama Mia, where her daughter finds her diary. I giggled over that. I do hope you enjoy my book and find some pieces that give you a new way of looking at joy.

Hi Mayra,
Journaling does become a habit- mine goes with me on vacation. I have had a few days here and there where I missed and I could definitely feel a difference in my day. I felt like I lost focus. It helps me to do it right away when I wake up. I light candles, say a prayer and anoint myself with pomegranate oil - then I journal. Soft music helps-lately for me it has been classical (Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven -a few others, too).

I began a journal the day that I decided to focus on making a career out of writing. It's been abandoned for far too long, but that's because I'm just too busy for it.

Sheri, what do you suggest for those of us who barely have time to tie our shoes, never mind sit down and write in a journal?

Thanks.

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
I think we all are busy and it is a challenge to carve out time-even for something that we know is good for us. Even if you can find a few minutes you can journal. Your journal need not be the next great American novel. You can free flow write or be very specific about what you write. I list some things that I am thanful for-then I list some goals and dreams-somedays that is all. Other days-my brain kicks into high gear and I write down solutions or ideas for projects. The bottom line is that the written word is powerful. When you write something down-it is much more likely to happen than if you just think about something. I hope these tips help. It should be fun-something you look forward to.
